Signs it’s time to Schedule a Fuel Injection Service

Fuel injection systems were first introduced in cars in the early 1950s and gradually gained acceptance over time and replaced the majority of carburetors by the early 1990s. The purpose of fuel injection systems is for your vehicle to determine how much fuel to use.  This is the reason newer vehicles get far better fuel mileage than older carbureted vehicles.

Fuel Injector Service - Poor Gas MileageHow Often Should Your Fuel Injection System be Serviced?

If you search the Internet you’ll find various answers to these questions.  Some mechanics recommend having your fuel injectors cleaned every 60,000 to 90,000 miles.  Other mechanics recommend that you have them serviced between 25,000 and 30,000 miles.  And, even a few recommend having your fuel injection system serviced at 45,000 miles or at 3 years.  What is the right answer?  Since every car is different, we strongly recommend you refer to your car’s owner’s manual for the right answer.  However, if you experience any of the common symptoms of your fuel injection not working properly, we suggest you contact your local auto mechanic to have it checked out.

Common Symptoms That Indicate It’s Time for a Fuel Injection Service

Fuel injection service can save you money not only by reducing the amount of fuel you use but also by extending the life of your vehicle.  Not only will you reduce the chance of your vehicle breaking down but you’ll increase the safety of your vehicle.  Having it properly serviced will also prevent your vehicle’s warranty from being voided.  There are for main reasons to get your fuel injection serviced:

  1. You want to improve your gas mileage which in turn saves money on fuel costs
  2. It will reduce emissions from your vehicle
  3. Restore the performance of your vehicle and protect it
  4. Extend the life of your car’s engine

If you notice any of the following symptoms you should contact your auto mechanic and have your fuel injection system checked out:

  1. Reduction in miles per gallon of gas
  2. Your vehicle has a loss of power and performance
  3. Your vehicle feels sluggish or hesitates when you accelerate
  4. Your vehicle has rough idling
  5. Your vehicle has a hard time starting
  6. You hear sounds during pre-ignition

What is included in a Fuel Injection Service?

Most mechanics will properly inspect all connections, the fuel rail, the pressure regulator, and the fuel and vacuum lines.  Once they complete their inspection they’ll pressure test the system to include the fuel pump and typically decarbonize other parts of your system such as the exhaust valves.  We recommend you contact your auto mechanic first to see what is included with their fuel injection service.
